before  5

These Sellers knew their exterior paint needed freshening, so they used a color consultation to figure out the best strategy. The initial analysis revealed:

  • An expanse of chalky flat paint surrounding the front door looked stained and stale.

  • The vinyl shutters had faded and the teal trim color dated the house with a late 1980s theme.

  • Because the moulding around the fanlight (above the front door) and the sidelights (on each side of door) were painted the same color as the space around it, these important architectural features faded into the background.

  • The pale yellow trim color was repeated on soffets and siding on all sides of the house -- and much of this paint was in good condition

  • The storm door had a dark frame that matched the front door color.

after  5  The Sellers chose to make a color photocopy of the color sketch to give the Painter as an additional reference, while preserving the original drawing.

Jo sketched a new color scheme complete with paint chips to show the Sellers what she had in mind. Her goal was to make the best improvement in curb appeal for the least amount of effort and expense. Recommendations include:

  • Keeping the pale yellow trim color on the soffets, window trim, and siding on the back & sides of house. By choosing new colors that worked with this one existing hue, Jo saved the Sellers a lot of money by limiting the amount of painting necessary.

  • Removing the storm door so a new front door color would not be outlined by the storm door's frame featuring the old color. New front door color: Dinosaur in high gloss, by Ace Hardware. This rich hue is deep but slightly warm as it carries a hint of olive in it.

  • Painting the "field" surrounding the decorative moulding around the front door using Primordial in Satin finish, by Ace Hardware. The moulding itself remains the existing pale yellow, but now it will contrast with its background to show off the attractive fanlight and sidelights at the front door.

  • Repeating the color Primordial in the triangular "field" in the gable end above the front door.

  • Repeating the color Primordial along the inside edges of windows to outline them. This is necessary on the front windows only. (Keeping the pale yellow outer trim of windows.)

  • Painting the pair of front columns and the trim of the overhead triangular gable with Warm Scones, in Satin Finish, by Ace Hardware.

  • Painting the vinyl shutters costs less than replacing them and is a durable solution when the correct paint is properly applied. Krylon® Fusion Epoxy Paint for Plastic is a spray-on paint that adheres to plastic surfaces. It comes in a limited array of colors; Jo chose Expresso in Gloss to complement the warm, updated color scheme. The Sellers removed the shutters, sprayed them on a horizontal surface according to Krylon® directions, and rehung the transformed shutters themselves. They hired a Painter for the rest of the job.
